The Sport Tracking project was a creative collaboration between Emmanuel Opadele, Sashoye Maxwell, and myself, Amari Buck, focused on crafting a high-energy, data-driven motion graphic experience centered around boxing. The goal was to simulate a futuristic heads-up display (HUD) overlaying a boxer’s movement in real time, blending visual storytelling with athletic performance. Built entirely in After Effects, the video fused sleek interface design with motion tracking to create an immersive breakdown of the sport. This was a personal exploration into how motion graphics can enhance storytelling in sports and bring a whole new layer of interactivity to combat visuals.

Market Analysis: We noticed that while fitness tech and sports analytics have grown immensely, boxing visuals have largely stayed traditional—mostly limited to scorecards and replays. This gap offered an opportunity to reimagine how boxing could be presented using modern motion design. Our target audience was the next-gen sports fan: people who love performance metrics, visual flair, and the intersection of tech and sports. With the rise of smart gear and performance tracking in boxing, our vision was to create a prototype that could live within a training platform or next-gen broadcast style, offering real-time feedback in a visually exciting way.

Brand Strategy: Instead of designing for a brand, we focused on developing a visual system—one that felt like it belonged in a sci-fi sports broadcast or elite athletic training program. We wanted something that could pair with a company like WHOOP, UFC Fight Pass, or even Nike Combat.

Design Process: We began by designing sleek HUD elements, inspired by fighter pilot displays and modern UI aesthetics. Emmanuel focused on the structure and hierarchy of the HUD design, while I handled the animation and integration of those elements with the footage. Using After Effects, I tracked the boxer’s movement and composited the UI to feel naturally synced with every motion. One major focus was making the graphics feel reactive—when the boxer punched, gauges lit up and stats spiked. The combination of glowing outlines, directional markers, and performance indicators created a high-impact experience that felt both cinematic and technical.

Challenges: The biggest challenge we faced was the footage itself. The video had low contrast, which made it extremely difficult to accurately track the boxer’s movement. Motion tracking in After Effects relies on clear visual markers, and the lack of contrast forced us to rely heavily on manual adjustments and refinement. It was time-consuming, but it sharpened our skills and taught us the importance of choosing the right footage or enhancing it during pre-editing. Despite this, we powered through the frustration and were able to produce a clean and believable motion-tracked HUD system that brought the concept to life.

Conclusion and learnings: The Sport Tracking (Boxing) project allowed us to explore the powerful intersection of sports, design, and motion graphics. It pushed our skills in compositing, tracking, and interface animation while highlighting the importance of teamwork and adaptability. We discovered how visual storytelling can amplify sports in new ways and how motion graphics can tell a deeper story beyond just the action. The experience taught us to work through technical obstacles and made us even more excited about the future of motion design in sports entertainment. This project was a knockout combo of creativity and problem-solving—and we’re proud of how it turned out.
